Extended Learning

Extra Support Gets Results

Learning doesn't stop when the school day or year comes to a close.

Extended Learning programs are a valuable tool in improving student achievement. When students are getting poor grades, testing below grade level, or dealing with issues that interfere with learning, teachers and community partners recommend extended learning programs. More than 3,700 benefit from these programs and about 80 percent come from low income families. With community partners, the Learning Community supports various Extended Learning programs that are helping children make significant gains.

3 Extended Learning Options

  1. Comprehensive – This program supplements student learning in the classroom, extending beyond the regular school day
  2. Summer – The summer program adds to the school year for kids who need more in order to continue to progress and catch up with their classmates. These classes also counter the summer learning gap, a time when some students actually lose ground for the upcoming school year.
  3. Tutoring – Students receive valuable one-on-one attention to improve their literacy skills and be more successful in the next school year.

Extended learning programs in grades K-6 set individual goals for each student. Programs range in length and frequency depending on the time of year.
