Superintendents' Early Childhood Plan

Purpose

Birth to Age 8

The Superintendents' Early Childhood Plan is a comprehensive, research-based approach to eliminate the achievement gap. Our 11 school districts support the development of an early learning system. Improving educational outcomes is a growing priority in the Learning Community, where 44-percent of students come from families qualifying for free or reduced price lunch.

Initial Impact

With an emphasis on quality and consistency, the first phase directly impacts six school districts:

  • 4,250 children
  • 150-200 children in home visiting program
  • 500 teachers
  • 12 school communities

Funding & Support

The Superintendents' Early Childhood Plan is funded by a portion of the Learning Community Elementary Levy. Annual funding is approximately $2.5 million.

History

A dramatic advance in early childhood education, the Superintendents' Early Childhood Plan is a first for Nebraska.

May 2013

Nebraska Legislature votes unanimously for LB 585 and additional one-half cent for Learning Community levy.

July 2014

Superintendents and Coordinating Council unanimously support early childhood plan development.

June 2015

Coordinating Council approves plan implementation in partnership with Buffet Early Childhood Institute.

August 2015

Coordinating Council approves funding, and full-implementation sites begin.
