Director of Strategic Initiatives
Monica R. Wells serves as the Director of Strategic Initiatives for the Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy County, where she provides visionary leadership to align organizational priorities with community needs. In this role, Monica develops and oversees collaborative strategies that bring together educators, families, and community partners to address opportunity gaps and strengthen family engagement across the region. She is responsible for guiding large-scale initiatives from design through implementation, measuring impact, and ensuring that every effort contributes to improved educational outcomes and family success. Monica’s work focuses on cultivating sustainable partnerships, coordinating resources, and creating innovative approaches that empower families and children to reach their full potential.
With more than 20 years of experience in education, leadership, and community engagement, Monica is widely recognized for her ability to foster strong partnerships between families, schools, and community organizations. She is deeply committed to creating pathways of opportunity, ensuring that every child and family has access to the tools and resources they need to thrive.
Prior to her current role, Monica served as the Family and Community Program Administrator at the Buffett Early Childhood Institute, where she worked to bridge early childhood efforts with K–12 systems and community partners to improve opportunities for children and families.
Monica’s dedication to service extends well beyond her professional work. She serves on the boards of Kids Can Community Center, Jesuit Academy, and Nebraska Children’s Home Society, and is the Board Vice President of African Culture Connections. Her previous leadership roles include Heartland Family Services’ North Omaha Community Council, Collective for Hope/Grief’s Journey, Nelson Mandela Elementary’s Community Academic Relations Committee, and service as a TeamMates Mentor.
A servant leader at heart, Monica also serves as a Deacon and Senior Leader for Congregational Care and Support at Church On Purpose. She is passionate about uniting families, educators, and community leaders to expand access, strengthen relationships, and build a stronger future for every child.
